Pawsitive time - Pawsitive mind

UMBC is now capitalizing on dogs’ abilities to help students de-stress during final exam week. Partnering with local animal shelters, puppies available for adoption are brought to the school for a stress-relief event. All week, students can enjoy a well-deserved study break while playing with some new furry friends!

What can we do to build a better UMBC?

For this project, we were tasked in designing a visual identity for a fictional event, service, or resource. My idea, Paws2Play, is an event that would collaborate with local animal shelters and help students de-stress before their exams.

Mental health problems among adults, often have long term consequences that hinder their performances and affect their academic achievements and physical health. However, studies have shown that the simple act of “petting animals releases an automatic relaxation response” that help lower anxiety and “acts as a catalyst in the therapy process”(UCLAhealth). Paws2Play would not only give animals the chance to be adopted, but it would also give students an opportunity to pause their studies and play with puppies. After all, a Pawsitive Time - Pawsitive Mind!

Sketches

Certain I wanted to have a dog element in the logo, I began by experimenting with different styles of the design. I felt rounded features were most appropriate because Paws2Play evoked a sense of playfulness. After drawing several iterations, I came up with the idea of having a dog fill in the shape of a play button. The benefit from doing this would allow the design itself to tell the story/message of the event, while keeping the look and feel cohesive and clean.

Colors

To find the right color scheme, I listed out words that could associate with Paws2Play’s identity: relax - therapy - comfort - energetic - outside - playful etc. From there, I knew I would choose between shades of blue/green or bright oranges/red.
